The microwave oven was invented in 1945 and since then it has become an indispensable kitchen appliance. There are three different sizes. The smaller model of oven has been labeled by the industry as being a desktop unit or a portable unit. The most common size of are eleven inches in height and fifteen inches in width and it also has a depth of ten inches. The bigger microwave models are commonly referred to as compact. These bigger microwaves tend to be twenty inches in width, fourteen inches deep and twelve inches in height. These compact models are the most common ovens, and they can still be considered as countertop.
The safety feature that is most important when cooking using one of these is that there is only a very small risk of burning or scalding. The walls of the oven do not normally get burning hot unlike the conventional styles of oven. The containers that are used when cooking in one of these microwave ovens will not normally get any hotter than one hundred degrees. When cooking on a conventional oven the pot will get very hot; therefore, this increases the risk of accidents. The lower cooking temperature in the countertop version also lowers the risk of the food getting charred, and this has been identified as something that can cause cancer.
Countertop microwave ovens will also have a very fast cooking time, and the oven only requires a small amount of space. These advantages make countertop microwave ovens very popular appliances for the kitchen regardless of the existing decor.
